So true. I h ave a set. Used it once on a Thunderbird (front springs), watched them flex. Finished the job. It was uneventful. Never wanted to touch the things again.
Used them again anyway on my brother’s Saab. So far so good. Less room to turn a wrench, but the springs are lighter-duty, so they don’t strain as much.

I bought a heavy duty set that seems to work great. biggest thing is they are so large it can be tough to maneuver them...

Quick struts AKA preloads.
They don’t offer them for anything I work on, of course.

I got halfway through compressing one once (using a nice $50 pair of Lisle compressors). I was completely exhausted and I still couldn’t get them compressed enough.
A couple hundred bucks at the shop was totally worth it after that.

Yup! Quick struts are complete assemblies that have the strut, the spring, and the top mount already assembled.
It means you don’t have to fuck with a spring compressor :o)

Now try them on 920# springs.
Update your will first.

I had a spring pop to one side and trap my hand. I yelled to a guy on the street and he pushed it over so I could get my hand out. I could have lost fingers!

Yeah my old work had a wall mounted compressor and it always scared the shit out of me too, I've had them slip a little but nothing serious, glad i don't have to mess with that any more though.

Unfortunately, the ones I see for my car at least tend to only be the lowest-end components.

ah gotcha, had not heard them called that before (not really sure what they were called actually)

The name-brand
quick struts are usually good (Monroe, KYB, Gabriel, Sachs). However, Monroe’s Econo-Matic/Roadmatic is cheaper and not as good as the premium quick struts.

I wasn’t too affeard of them when I did the struts on a forester, but then again...forester. They weren’t like the beef coils on the cruiser. That would be a be hell nay on those. They again, I can almost take those out by hand at full flex.
